SBL WOMEN VS
NORTHSIDE WIZARDS
by Georgia McCarron
The Brisbane Capitals SBL
women battled tough opposition
on the weekend, unfortunately
going down by 8 to the Northside
Wizards.
Grace Amey, Lauren Mua and
Regan McCarty were top scorers
for the Wizards, proving to be too
strong for our Capitals girls to de-
fend. The SBL girls struggled to
find rhythm at the beginning of
the game, allowing the Wizards to
push the lead out to beyond 20.
Knuckling down on defence and
finding their own pace of the game
the Capitals girls fought back to
only go down by 8. A good ef-
fort with top scorers, Ale Orozco
12, Grace Champion and Raquel
Spies 10.
This weekend the SBL women
have a BYE, with the next game
on Sunday July 16 versing USC
Rip on their home court.
SBL MEN VS
NORTHSIDE WIZARDS
by Sean Connelly Head Coach
This week the SBL Men headed
over to cross town rivals Northside
Wizards, for a clash that was
promising to be one of the best
games of the season.
From the get go, Northside had
control. The reliable high pressure
LAST WEEK'S WRAP UP
defence that the boys normally
bring to a game was just one step
behind Northside’s free flowing
Offence. The Caps struggled early
to find any rhythm offensively with
players just standing from our
transition into our half court mo-
tion. This made it difficult for an
active Matthew Booysen to find
players to gain any momentum.
Northside opened up an early 10
point lead leading into the 2nd
quarter.
The start of the second was no
different from the first as Northside
pushed out to a 19 point lead in
the first few minutes of the quar-
ter. With the Caps slowing things
down to get the execution right
we started to make run. This was
on the back of sharp shooter Dan
Atcheson as he went for 3 from 3
from outside the arc and with the
help of Tim Soong were able to go
on a 11 – 0 run to get the game
back 8. Northside called a timeout
to kill the momentum and unfor-
tunately it worked. Northside were
able to open up the gap again to
head to the main break up 46 – 32.
After a positive half time dis-
cussion we came out strong to
close the gap back to 10 Before
Northside called another timeout.
Once again this killed our momen-
tum as we struggled to find our
feet on the floor as we left gap
after gap and allowed Northside
to get established around the rim
as they pushed back out to a 14
point lead.
The start of the 4th we came
out with renewed enthusiasm as
we closed up our defence and
pushed the ball on transition to
close the gap to 8 with 5 minutes
to go. Northside then hit a few
baskets to push the score back
to 14 with 2 min to go as we con-
tinued to apply pressure. We were
unable to get our offence going
on a poor shooting night and just
couldn’t close the gap as we went
down 83 – 69.
We have a lot to work on this
week and felt at times during this
game we had control however this
was not at the level we are capa-
ble of playing at. We just couldn’t
maintain the focus coming out of
the breaks and timeouts where
we allowed Northside to maintain
their momentum.
This week we are back on the
road as we take on Ipswich on
their home floor.
