QBL MEN
HUDOR MEN V USC RIP CITY AND TOWNSVILLE FLAMES
by Geoff Tarrant Head Coach
Our destiny was in our own hands , the equation was simple , win both games for the weekend against the teams sitting directly below us in third and fourth spots on the ladder and we secure the coveted Minor Premiership and home court advantage throughout the finals . This was the situation the mighty Caps were faced with last weekend and I ’ m pleased to say that we got the job done in style .
Both games were tough encounters against quality sides fighting for the highest possible finishing positions on the ladder , there was a lot at stake for each of the teams . The Caps worked hard from the outset in both contests and had established leads of around 10-12 points by midway through the second quarter in each of the games . From that point the scores would ebb and flow for the remainder of the contests with our visitors getting the scores back to a couple of baskets before the Caps would lift and get back out to a safe margin before the visitors would make another run but neither team could actually wrest the lead from the Caps at any stage . Both games were played with great intensity and the fact that the home team was able to lift and make big plays every time our opposition made a run is something that only great teams are capable of and reminded the coaching staff of the superb performance displayed by the Cairns Marlins in defeating the
Caps in last years Grand Final series .
The game scores were 97-91 against the Sunshine Coast Rip and 109-102 against Townsville . There were some awesome performances put in on the weekend with Aaron Anderson scoring 33 points at 64 % in game 1 and backing up with another 20 point haul in game 2 . Evergreen veteran Dusty Rychart continued his amazing form with 20 points and 10 rebounds against the Rip and followed up with 25 points and 10 rebounds against the Suns . Princeton Onwas was very strong in both games but particulary against the Suns when it really mattered and he was backed up by solid performances from Zac Carter and Anthony Kopcikas who has hit his best for at the right time of the year .
We started the year missing 5 of last years top 10 players and were widely tipped to finish towards the bottom of the ladder this year by the “ Experts ” but this Caps team will not lie down to anybody and took great delight in proving the naysayers wrong by equalling last years win / loss record of 14 and 3 but also securing top spot on the ladder over Mackay ( 14 and 3 ) due to our tough road win against them a few weeks back . We need to keep our momentum going in Saturday nights sudden death quarter final against the Rockhampton Rockets which kicks off at 7.30pm at Auchenflower . The game will be very tough considering Rocky are one of just three teams to lower our colours this season . We would dearly love as much support as possible for this weeks super important encounter to help us get over the line and keep our winning run going all the way to the championship .
