When it comes to nutrition , many falsely believe that snacks are off limits . Selfcontrol is important , but rather than restricting yourself , consider switching to healthy snack options that can help provide the fuel you need to feel good and get in shape rather than reaching for overly sweet , sugary or salty bites .

Here , Bianca Gillett , the director of recreation at Newport Beach Country Club , shares how you can seek out healthy alternatives to keep you satiated between meals .

HEALTHY OPTIONS There are a variety of snacks you can turn to when you ’ re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle . One such option , according to Gillett , is a protein-focused bite like beef jerky ( she recommends the brands Stryve or Chomps ). Other ways to indulge in protein include certain yogurts , such as siggi ’ s Icelandic-style yogurt , as well as anything with chickpeas , from hummus paired with pita bread and veggies to baked chickpea snacks . Protein bars are also popular .
Alternatively , she says fruit can be a wonderful snack . “ Fruit is always an easy and healthy choice ,” she explains . “ Berries are the best of the best , … due to the antioxidants they carry and [ the fact that they have ] less natural sugar — unlike bananas .”
Many of the menu items available at NBCC are oriented toward those who are health conscious , and a lot of that is thanks to Executive Chef Graeme Blair ’ s background . “ Graeme is fortunate to be married to a clinical dietician at Hoag Hospital ,” Gillett notes . “ They both enjoy a Southern California attitude when it comes to exercise and fitness . This enthusiasm extends to the healthy options on the menu . Having a dietician to brainstorm with at home is a win for our members .”
