I also spotted a guy with a trailer that converts into a small boat. That was
quite dandy ha-ha J
First light hit and we sped off to start our day. By speeding off I mean cruising in 5th speed with a 44lbs trolling motor. My wife opted for a texas rigged
fluke and I started with a zara spook as I was hoping to get lucky with a fat
one early and calm my nerves.
25 minutes into the comp my wife hooks into a solid fish, after a brief fight
she landed her 1.1kg keeper on the lip (no space in the taxi for a net). Into
the makeshift live well she went.
By this time I had switched to a spinnerbait hoping to trap a bass coming to
feed before the sun rears its head over the small hill shadowing the dam. Another 5 minutes later and wifey hooks into another fish, this time a 500g
scrappy but it counts! Olivie 2, Andre 0.
Wifey’s Early Keeper
I was keeping an eye on other craft nearby as any seasoned angler would do
to see if they land anything but it was dead all over! Not a splash anywhere!
Not going to lie here , this was a relief! I have failed to land a
fish in the golden hour! We swiftly went to the weigh station to
weigh her two keepers.
The good thing about this comp was that you can weigh 10
fish and heaviest 5 counts, this promotes quick weigh and release and spares the bass hours in the livewell waiting for a
cull.
As we embarked again I was worried… My wife which I have
trained in the last 5 months to fish for bass has caught the first
quality fish for the day and the cheerful mocking from the
weigh station didn't help my confidence. My thoughts dwindled to last year’s transition time to early winter and it snapped
my brain into overdrive! I “klapped” bass at a farm dam with a
rattle-trap last year. I tied on my aging Rat-L-Trap and cast it
a mile away. Waited till it hit bottom and with a jerk started a
slow alluring retrieve hopping it over the sludge and veg at the
bottom.
