150th round up
A year to remember
As most of you will be aware by now, Barnardo’s is 150 years old this
year. Throughout the anniversary year of 2016 this special occasion
is being commemorated across the organisation.
Since Thomas Barnardo founded the charity in 1866 it has grown and
changed immeasurably to meet the needs of children and young people.
Today Barnardo’s is the UK’s leading children’s charity and runs over 996
vital services. Over the last year we have worked with 248,000 children,
young people and families.
A number of special events have taken place so far this year to
commemorate our anniversary. Here are some of the highlights.
Party at the Palace
Around 5,000 guests attended
a special Barnardo’s event at
Buckingham Palace, hosted
by the charity’s President, Camilla,
the Duchess of Cornwall. Barnardo’s
Old Boys and Girls, current service
users and staff were among those
invited.
Autumn 2016
A rose to remember
The world-famous Chelsea Flower
Show in June saw the launch of the
‘Sweet Syrie’ rose by Barnardo’s
Ambassador, Rosamund Pike.
‘Sweet Syrie’ was created by
specialist rose grower Harkness
to raise vital funds for the charity
and to honour the work of Thomas
Barnardo’s wife, Syrie, who worked
alongside her husband throughout
his life and continued his work
after Barnardo died. Buy your rose
