AR TS
&
BUSINESS
A Powerful Pair
Maatla Kgasa
Before breaking down the relationship between arts and
businesses, it’s logical and perhaps fitting to note that art
on its own is a business, generating huge profits.
The comparison of arts and business yields one main
lesson: entrepreneurs start by looking for a market
or determining what the market needs then create a
product customised and tailor made to the identified
needs.
On the other hand, artists take an entirely different and
opposite direction. They start by creating a product
(painting, drawing, film, song, etc.) and then look for
a market to sell it. Such an approach deviates from the
natural approach followed by businesses.
Over the years, we have seen the evolution of businesses
and the continual creation of mutual beneficial synergies
or partnerships between artists and corporates to push
brands and ultimately goods or services to consumers.
