The Council was an executive-driven body that was structured to address the challenges in the sector. On 7 March 2005, the board of the council resolved to change the name of the council to The Banking Association South Africa because this was a more appropriate description of the structure of the body and its role. It has been led since then by Cassim (Cas) Coovadia, who was appointed the Managing Director, a position he still retains today.
