The South African Banking Risk Information Centre
(SABRIC) was formed in 2002 as a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Banking Association of South Africa.
The centre is primary funded by Absa, First National
Bank and Standard Bank. Investec, African Bank,
Capitec Bank, Mercantile Bank, Bank of Athens,
UBank, Citi Bank, Bidvest Bank and Nedbank are the
other funding banks of SABRIC. In addition, SBV, G4S,
Protea Coin (cash-in-transit companies) and ATM
Solutions (independent ATM service provider) also
contribute to SABRIC’s funding.
SABRIC is instrumental in reducing banking crime
through a co-operative approach between all
the stakeholders. Its principle business is to detect,
prevent and reduce organised crime in the banking
industry through effective public private partnerships.

In addition to fighting crime, SABRIC embarks on
awareness initiatives in order to educate consumers
on how to bank safer. SABRIC co-ordinates interbank activities aimed at addressing organised bankrelated commercial and violent crime and acts as a
nodal point between the bank industry and others,
in respect of issues relating to crime. The creation of
public awareness of various bank-related crimes and
educating the public on how to protect themselves is
one of SABRIC’s key focus areas.
