What ’ s it like ?
Case Study – Air Specialist Class 1 ( AS1 ) Jonathan Griffiths
I began looking for new and exciting opportunities to complement my career as a freelance musician . Becoming a Part Time Voluntary Reservist ( PTVR ) in the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force has become the perfect addition to this as I am able to fit my RAF commitments perfectly around my civilian work . Before joining the RAF Reserves , I enjoyed a varied musical career , performing worldwide alongside well-known artists or in musicals and shows , but now I have another avenue of employment within military music . Recently , I was offered the opportunity to play for the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace . The experience was fantastic in every way ; it was extremely challenging as it was completely different to what I am used to , but the training and support I received from my colleagues was first class . Being one of 42 highly professional and accomplished musicians playing and marching down The Mall towards Buckingham Palace was a proud moment , and an experience I ’ ll never forget ! I know there will be many more similarly exciting experiences yet to come and I intend to make the most of the many wonderful opportunities the RAF has to offer .
