What ’ s it like ?
Life in the Band with Sergeant Robbins
I joined the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in October 2016 having enjoyed many years in the regular bands . The transition was straightforward and enables me to continue to be part of RAF Music Services playing at receptions and dinners with a wind quintet as well as taking part in engagements augmenting the regular bands . Our training nights are spent rehearsing for forthcoming receptions or exploring new material .
This year I was lucky enough to be able to be part of the RAF
100 celebrations in London . The massed band marched up The Mall into Buckingham Palace forecourt where the ceremonial parade took place with a 100-piece flypast . It was an amazing experience .
The RAF Reserves provide me with everything required to
fulfil my role including quality instruments , uniforms and all necessary training . I can fit in our rehearsals and engagements around my full time job in a school . The quintet have given a performance in school where the children and staff were enthralled ! I have found that serving with the Band has given me the drive and incentive to maintain and improve my playing and I hope to continue to serve for many years to come .
