Climate outlooks for Australia are forecasting a wetter than average winter and early spring for the eastern two-thirds of mainland Australia .
Confidence in the outlook has been reinforced by the development of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole ( IOD ) in the Indian Ocean , which has historically been associated with wetter conditions in winter and spring .
The last negative IOD event in 2016 was one of the strongest events on record , resulting in very wet conditions in winter and spring over eastern Australia
While the strength of the 2021 event is forecast to be weaker than in 2016 , significant impacts may still occur , so make sure you watch our climate outlooks and listen for updates from the Bureau .
