As a Lead Author for Chapter 3 of the IPCC AR7 Working Group I report, I look forward to contributing to a synthesis of the latest understanding of regional climate change and extremes. Ensuring the material is scientifically rigorous, balanced, and policy-relevant is essential, while the review process also helps identify gaps that guide future research. I’ m particularly looking forward to working with the other authors and Coordinating Lead Authors, building the camaraderie that develops through shared deadlines and collaboration— something I valued during previous IPCC assessments, including the Special Reports on Extremes and on the Ocean and Cryosphere, and AR5’ s chapter on coasts.
Kathleen McInnes, WGI, Chapter 3: Changes in regional climate and extremes, and their causes
Contributing to the next IPCC Assessment Report is going to be a demanding but hopefully also rewarding experience. As part of the Chapter 5 Lead Author team, my work will focus on future emissions and land-use scenarios, including global temperature and carbon cycle response. The first Lead Author meeting in Paris at the beginning of December will bring all three working groups together and also mark the formal start of the process. I look forward to working with other international experts on developing our chapter over the next couple of years, ensuring that the latest science is well represented.
Tilo Ziehn, WGI, Chapter 5: Scenarios and projected future global temperatures
I am a Lead Author of WGI Chapter 6 on global climate projections. I expect to contribute to the evaluation of projected changes in precipitation, monsoons, and modes of variability like ENSO, bringing a Southern Hemisphere perspective to the chapter team( along with fellow Australian Nicola Maher). I have been a Contributing Author of the last two IPCC reports, and I decided to nominate for Lead Author this time as it feels increasingly urgent to communicate the latest climate science. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the team in Paris to start work on the First Order Draft.
Josephine Brown, WGI, Chapter 6: Global projections of Earth system responses across time scales
I am Lead Author for Working Group I, Chapter 8, on " Abrupt changes, low-likelihood high impact events and critical thresholds, including tipping points, in the Earth system ". Together with my colleagues from Chapter 8, we will assess the probability of future abrupt climate change and the possibility of cascading and compounding effects within the Earth system. Our assessment will draw on paleoclimate evidence, future and idealised numerical simulations, and statistical frameworks.
