University of Melbourne victorious in Priestley Cup '16

News

The annual AMOS Melbourne Centre Priestley Soccer Cup, held on 8 December last year, had a uncertain start, with emails flying as to whether the round robin between the University of Melbourne, Monash University, CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology could be played or not. It had rained heavily through the night and into the morning.

However, keeping a close eye on the radar, the Melbourne Committee deemed at 1pm that the rain would pass and that the pitches would be dry enough by the time a 3pm start came round. Under the watch of the referees, Andrew King and David Karoly, play was once again at a high standard, with the four teams competing closely, and a few heated moments!

In an upset win, the University of Melbourne was able to take home the trophy, ending reining champions BoM's winning streak, and placing them in fourth place. Monash University came in second, and CSIRO in third place.

The trophy was presented to the winning team, alongside pizza and beers on the University of Melbourne Earth Science balcony and the new Melbourne Centre committee was elected. We would like to welcome David Hoffman, Mathias Zeller and Martin Jucker to the committee and congratulate Tim Morrows on being elected the new Melbourne Centre chair.
