It is hard to pick out highlights of the conference, but for me highlights included holding sessions on observations, indigenous weather knowledge and paleo-climate reconstructions, which had not featured much in previous recent conferences. Also notable was the focus on Antarctic Science done on both sides of the Tasman and the rapid development of attribution studies for extreme events such as heatwaves (with recent heatwave case studies already available). Our regular sessions on modelling for weather, climate and oceans, on high impact weather and climate and services always stimulate discussion and ideas. It is also pleasing to note that the quality of student presentations was high.

I am sure we all reiterate our particular thanks to Clem Davis and Jeanette Dargaville, who worked tirelessly to ensure the week went without a hitch. Thanks also to all the student helpers from ANU, who were cheerful, helpful and also enjoyed the talks they got to see.

Finally, and very importantly, thanks to our great sponsors, exhibitors and donors. We really appreciate your support and we hope we bring value to you by supporting the training of young students and graduates, by bringing a range of related communities together, and by providing time and space to share information and ideas.

Welcome to the AMOS Council for 2017 and thanks to outgoing Council members

I have great pleasure in introducing your AMOS Council for 2017. In particular, welcome to our new Secretary, Sonya Fiddes, our Education and Outreach Chair Stephanie Downes, our Equity and Diversity Chair Melissa Hart and our 2018 Conference Convenor Jason Evans.

Thank you also to all 2016 officers and to outgoing officers who have all served the Society so well, namely Damien Irving (Secretary), Melissa Lyne (who was helping with BAMOS, communications as well as Education and Outreach), Clem Davis (Conference Convenor) and Ailie Gallant (Equity and Diversity Chair).

Our Anniversary year

AMOS is having a 30th anniversary celebration this year, and we plan a high-level forward looking theme/event as well as a celebration of our 30 years. We have agreed with the Royal Meteorological Society (RMS) to hold a symposium in Melbourne in late August -- they helped us set up an Australian branch of RMS 45 years ago. The plan for the Symposium, 22-23 August, is on the right. There will also be: Weather and climate entertainment (celebrate our sciences), weather and climate artwork, a cocktail party, wine, cheese, and birthday cake.
