Weather in literature quiz with Matthias Tomczak
Welcome to the third in a BAMOS series of weather-related literature quizzes. Can you guess which book the passage on the right is from?
The quote from our last issue came from The Mirror of the Sea first published in 1906 and the first of Joseph Conrad’ s two autobiographical memoirs in which he describes his experiences at sea. The quote is from the chapter Rulers of East and West.
Again Tom Beer was the only person to correctly identify the quote. In his submission, he wrote:“ The writing style was that of Joseph Conrad but I could not recall reading anything of his about winds. I cheated and used Google to find that I was correct about the author, but had never before heard of The Mirror of the Sea, from which the quote comes.”
In which book would you find this quote?
At sea nothing happens to the sea. Nothing happens to the sky. The sun comes up from the east and goes down to the west. The moon grows from a sickle to an arc lamp, and comes later and later until she is lost in the light as other things are lost in the darkness.
