About the author: Gavin O’ Brien is a Foundation Member of AMOS whose extensive career includes time with the Bureau of Meteorology’ s satellite program and oberver course, the NSW public service and the University of New England before he began teaching in high schools around Canberra in the early 1980s. When he retired from teaching in 2008, Gavin moved to the Australian Bureau of Statistics before retiring in 2016.
Gavin has been observing and recording the weather since 1961. He set up a weather station in Nui Dat Vietnam during his National Service with the Army 1970 – 71 and started recording Canberra weather in 1983. Gavin began operating a Davis Vantage Pro 2 at his home in 2009. Gavin is a severe Weather Observer for the Bureau of Meteorology and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.
