Then, Louisa remembered Jane had recently begun to wear braces on her teeth. “Jane the Train has railroad tracks on her teeth!” She made a noise like a train.

Jane’s expression became a mixture of pain and fury. She kept her lips closed tightly to hide her teeth and the braces, while she shoved her hand deep into the flour bag, pulled out a big fist full of flour, and stomped over to Louisa. Louisa tried to shove Jane away, but they both slipped and the flour dust flew. The bowl slid off the countertop and batter became airborne.

“You…you can’t!” Louisa was so angry that she couldn’t speak. Her hair and face were whitened.

“Oh no!” said Jane looking at the computer.

“What’s the commotion in there?” called Mrs. Fields from the porch.

“Nothing!” they answered together. Their faces showed that “nothing” was not the truth as they saw that there was now flour covering the light fixture in the ceiling and the flower arrangement, while the computer keyboard was splattered with batter.

“We have to keep her from coming in here while we get this cleaned up,” Louisa whispered. “Keeping the computer clean was the only thing she told us to do and we’ve ruined it!”

“Maybe we can clean it up and it will be okay,” Jane said optimistically.

“She’s going to be so disappointed in us,” Louisa worried.
