CONQUERING THE ULTIMATE
HUMAN RACE
On 14 June, two of our very own runners, Lloyd Tinney and Phiko Vezi, took on one of the greatest challenges in endurance sport. The legendary Comrades Marathon.
Covering a demanding 85.77km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, this year’ s Up Run tested every athlete’ s physical and mental strength as they battled their way through the rolling hills of KwaZulu- Natal in exceptionally hot conditions.
For Lloyd, the day marked the fulfilment of a dream months in the making. Taking on his very first Comrades Marathon, he arrived at the start line after countless early mornings, long training runs, and over 1,350 km of training completed between January and June.
Lloyd said“ The famous five big hills certainly lived up to their reputation, with relentless climbing from start to finish. Seeing my family at the 60 km and 75 km marks gave me the boost I needed to keep going. I achieved my main goal of earning a Bill Rowan Medal, finishing in 8 hours and 44 minutes, just shy of my 8:30 target. I’ m incredibly proud of my first Comrades and already looking forward to the Back-to-Back Down Run next year. A huge thank you to Balwin Sport for sponsoring my race entry and supporting me on this journey.
