Team Louisiana wins girls Junior Tri-State
The Louisiana Girls Junior Tri-State team earned
a record-breaking number of points this past week
as they won the annual summer competition against
teams from Arkansas and Mississippi. The event was
held at the picturesque Old Waverly Golf Course in
West Point, Mississippi.
Team Louisiana racked up 13½ points followed
by Mississippi with 5½ and Arkansas with 5. The
Louisiana girls played 16 matches over the two days
of competition, winning 13, tying one and losing two.
Members of the winning team were Tri-State
veterans Julia Johnson of Baton Rouge, Mary Chauvin
of Hammond, Abbey Daniel of Covington and
Aoife O’Donovan of Monroe and first time Tri-State
players Brooke Duzan of Sulphur, Camille Simon of
New Orleans, Brooke Tyree of Sulphur and Alden
Wallace of Shreveport. The team was captained by
Sandra Smith of Delhi with assistants Ali Lucas of
Crowley and Savannah Ennis of Abita Springs. Also
accompanying the team were LWGA President Mary
Edwards and Secretary Pam Washington.
Louisiana jumped out to an early lead as they won
all four best ball matches Wednesday morning. They
came back in the afternoon to earn 2½ points out of a
possible four in alternate shot to give them 6½ points.
At that point Arkansas had 3 points and Mississippi
2½.
Camille Simon of New Orleans, one of four firsttime Tri-Staters, jumped out to an early lead in her
match against senior Taylor Loeb of Arkansas. Simon
cruised to a 6 and 5 win to set the tone for the day for
Team Louisiana. Simon’s win was the first of 7 for
Louisiana out of 8 matches giving them the recordsetting 13½ points. Johnson also added an early point
as she defeated her opponent Carlee Nanney of
Mississippi 7&6.
Returnees Johnson and Chauvin and rookies Simon
and Duzan each earned 3 points for the team as they
won all of their matches.
“I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of these
girls,” said Louisiana Captain Smith. “They came into
the competition with the mindset that we would bring
the Tri State trophy back to Louisiana…and they were
able to get it done in fine fashion.”
This win also enabled Team Louisiana to earn its
fifth win in the 12 years of Junior Tri-State competition.
Arkansas has 4 wins and Mississippi 3. Three of this
year’s players, Johnson, Chauvin and O’Donovan were
also part of the winning team in 2014. Story submitted.
