Why
DADS matter
Fatherhood in South Africa is at a crossroads. With fewer than four in 10 children living with their biological fathers, the absence of dads has become a defining challenge for families and communities. Yet when fathers are present and engaged, the benefits are profound.
Family in South Africa is facing a serious crisis. The State of South Africa’ s Fathers 2024 report reveals that in 2023, only 35.6 % of children lived with their biological fathers, while 40.3 % lived with men who were not their biological fathers.
These numbers highlight the growing reality of households where single mothers carry the full weight( financially, physically, and emotionally) of raising families. They also raise difficult questions about how the absence of fathers shapes children’ s lives well into adulthood.
“ The way men are wired is different,” explains Shenaaz Moos, registered counsellor, mother of three, and founder of Happy Confident Me.“ They don’ t always feel the need for the long to-do lists that moms juggle, and often bring a sense of fun because they carry a lighter cognitive load as parents.”
This means that when dads are emotionally present, not just physically, children benefit from a more balanced parenting experience.“ It strengthens their self-esteem, builds confidence, and helps them develop healthier emotional regulation skills.”
Your child’ s self-worth
Statistics show that supportive fathers help children feel safe and valued. This foundation is essential for developing a sense of belonging and self-worth.
“ Getting to know your child by showing genuine interest in their ideas and activities reinforces their value,” she adds.“ Encouragement after effort, not just success, combined with listening and validating emotions, sends powerful messages such as:‘ I am valued’,‘ My voice matters’, and‘ I am capable’.”
A father’ s absence, on the other hand, may leave children struggling with belonging or identity, experiencing feelings of rejection or abandonment, and facing challenges in building confidence, trust, and healthy relationships.
