The perks of single-sex schools

Think single-sex schools are from a bygone era long ago? Think again. The real perks might just surprise you …

The idea of single-sex schools often evokes an image of rigid uniforms, stiff upper lips and possibly some very questionable hairstyles from the 1980s, but before you dismiss them entirely, let’ s have a little chat about the actual benefits of single-sex education. Spoiler alert: it’ s not all about the plaid skirts and stiff blazers.

1

No distractions – seriously
In a co-ed school, the social dynamics can sometimes overshadow the educational ones. In single-sex schools, those distractions are a lot fewer. As Kelley Litkie, marketing manager at Durban Girls’ College, points out,“ Girls’ schools create a really special learning environment … built exclusively for them.” The same can be said for boys’ schools. In this space, students can focus on learning without the pressure of impressing or competing with the opposite sex.

2

Tailored teaching styles
“ Research consistently shows that girls and boys often approach learning differently,” says Litkie.“ Single-sex schools can respond to these differences, adapting teaching methods, classroom dynamics, and leadership opportunities to align with girls’ strengths.” So, whether it’ s a practical experiment in science or a group debate on literature, teaching can be tailored to how each gender tends to excel.

3Building confidence –

without the pressure
We all remember what it was like being a teenager around the opposite sex. Naturally, students might feel a bit intimidated if they’ re constantly competing with the opposite sex. In a singlesex environment, there’ s often a sense of camaraderie. Litkie also highlights the power of an allgirls school to cultivate resilience, independence and self-expression. Without the pressure of social comparison, students often feel more comfortable stepping into leadership roles, which can boost their confidence and self-esteem.
