Unplug to reconnect

This holiday, screens don’ t have to steal the spotlight. A balanced break builds confidence, creativity and memories that outshine any device— all season long.
By Sithembile Mere, child and teen psychologist

As the December holidays approach, bringing with them a well-deserved break from school and routine, many parents find themselves navigating the familiar challenge of managing screen time. While digital devices offer entertainment and connection, striking a healthy balance is key to ensuring our children experience a truly enriching and restorative holiday.

This festive season, let’ s approach screen time with intentionality, much like we nurture confidence and teach excellence. Rather than viewing it as a battle, consider it an opportunity to guide our children towards self-regulation and a diverse range of activities that contribute to their overall wellbeing.
1
Believe in a balanced approach
Just as we believe in the transformative power of confidence, let’ s also embrace the benefits of a balanced lifestyle. Recognise that screens can be a valuable tool for learning and creativity when used thoughtfully. This holiday, introduce principles of balance with your children, empowering them to understand why limits are in place. When children genuinely trust in their abilities to gain greater enjoyment, they are more likely to embrace the concept of balance.
2
Nurture and cultivate diverse interests
The holidays are a prime opportunity to explore and develop new skills. What comes easily to your child? What are the skills they demonstrate effortlessly? This observation will guide you in encouraging activities beyond the screen. Understand what truly captures their imagination and guide them in understanding the many avenues to achieving their goals. Encourage outdoor play, creative arts, reading, and family time. These experiences are the fertile soil in which curiosity and well-rounded development flourish.
