Drakensberg
Tucked along the eastern border of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, the Drakensberg is South Africa’ s worst-kept best secret and thankfully, still far from overcrowded during the summer months. With towering peaks, lush valleys, and fresh mountain air, it’ s a natural playground for families.
What to do:
• Take gentle hikes to waterfalls and rock art sites. Yes, even the kids will enjoy it( especially if you bribe them with a marshmallow braai at the end).
• Try horse riding through the foothills or spot eland and baboons in Royal Natal National Park.
• In winter, you might even see a sprinkling of snow. Cue the snowball fights!
Top tip: Stay in one of the many cosy chalets or family-friendly resorts with built-in activities and pools, so grown-ups get a break too.
