Talking it out
When children feel heard, their anxiety tends to shrink.“ Open communication helps children feel seen, heard and supported,” says Dadswell.
Create space for regular, pressure-free check-ins.“ Listen attentively and validate their emotions,” she recommends.“ If they share specific worries, brainstorm solutions or role-play scenarios together.”
Sometimes big emotions show up in less-than-ideal ways.“ Children often communicate big emotions as tantrums,” Dadswell notes,“ and this is a normal part of growing up.”
Here are a few of her favourite tools to support emotional regulation:
• Use simple language to label feelings:“ You look really upset right now. It’ s okay to feel that way.”
• Offer choices:“ Would you like a hug or some quiet time?”
• Create a calm corner with soft toys, books or soothing music.
• Use feelings charts or calm-down cards with visual coping strategies.
• Praise emotional wins:“ I noticed you asked for a walk instead of yelling. That was such a good choice!”
Mindfulness to the rescue
“ Mindfulness equips children with tools to recognise and manage anxiety before it becomes overwhelming,” says Dadswell.
Start with simple breathing exercises or short, guided meditations. Another great technique is‘ 5-4-3-2-1 grounding’: ask your child to name five things they see, four they hear, three they feel, two they smell and one they taste.
“ These practices bring them back to the present moment,” Dadswell explains,“ helping them notice their feelings without judgment.” And remember, children model what they see.“ Practising mindfulness yourself shows your child that managing emotions is a lifelong skill,” she says.
Back-to-school anxiety is completely normal, especially after a long break. With a bit of planning and open conversation, you can help your child head into the new school year with calm confidence.
