Make your child’ s first dental visit a breeze! Here’ s how to turn a potentially stressful experience into a smile-worthy milestone.

If you dread going to the dentist, it’ s no surprise your child might not be thrilled either. But if you want to protect those pearly whites, early dental visits are key. So how can we make it a positive experience for both parents and kids? Here are five ways to keep it as stress-free as possible.

Choose the right dentist
Just because you love your dentist doesn’ t mean they’ re the best fit for your baby. Look for a paediatric dentist – they’ re specially trained to care for little teeth and know how to make the experience a positive one.
Start early
According to the South African Dental Association( SADA), your baby should visit the dentist when their first tooth appears or by age one, whichever comes first. This helps catch issues early and gets your baby comfortable with the dentist. Make it routine – every six months. If visits only happen when there’ s pain, they’ ll associate the dentist with discomfort.
Be positive
In the lead-up to a visit, talk about how great it is to have clean teeth and a bright smile. Emphasise the benefits of dental care( and maybe skip any mention of pain). Don’ t be afraid to make it fun!
Bribe them
You heard right! Plan something fun for after the appointment. It gives them something to look forward to if they’ re feeling nervous. And don’ t forget to praise them when it’ s done.
Finally, stay calm
If you’ re anxious, your little one will pick up on it. So take a few deep breaths and put on a smile. You and your baby are in good hands.
