Celebrating Mo th er’s Day As Mother’s Day rapidly approaches, I found myself pondering the question: What it is that makes a mother? I thought the best place to start would be to ask the experts their opinion, so I went to the top and asked the people with many years of combined experience of being mothered. The first response to the question was enlightening: “A mother is someone who cares for you, and looks after you and everything you need, she makes you feel good. There is other people in my life who do that too like my Nanna, my Aunties and some friends. Would they be like my second mu ms ? “ Ashley, aged 10 Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate all the wonderful things mothers do, and the great people mothers are to their children, and we do that for all mothers. However, I also think of women who were not my birth mother, but who treated me with love, nurtured me and helped me become who I am. “A mother isn’t the person who gives birth to you but the person who supports and loves you through all walks of life” Mary, aged 18 (foster child) The truth is that not every biological mother is up for the task. It’s easy to have a child; it’s not always so easy to care for one. The positive side to this tragic fact is that, even though some biological mothers might be incapable of doing the job, many other women are willing to step in as surrogate mothers, giving these children the affection and support they could not obtain from their biological mum. 16 “A mother is someone that loves unconditionally, gives guidance and teaches you the importance of morals and values. Biology doesn’t necessarily make you a mother; it’s the willingness to put someone else’s happiness and wellbeing ahead of your own” Samantha, aged 16 For many people, myself included, females, other than our mothers have influenced our lives. Many of these women are models of courage, generosity and perseverance, teachers who share their knowledge and experience and nurture curiosity and creativity. If it weren’t for these women we wouldn’t be where we are today? “A mother is someone that cares about you and does things for you. They don’t say bad words in front of you, unless you are big enough. They also care for other kids that need it.” Maddy, aged 8
