Holiday safety tips and checks

In case of an emergency , call ER24 ER24 , a national emergency medical service , can be contacted for any medical emergency in South Africa . Simply dial 084 124 for assistance .
If you come across an accident call ER24 immediately and provide as much detail of the incident as possible , including an accurate location and landmarks .
Before you leave home 1 . Check you have your Bonitas membership card or a digital version of your card with you .
2 . Make sure you have filled your chronic prescriptions and have packed medications for the duration of your holiday . Carry your chronic and acute allergy medication with you and make sure that your alert bracelets or notifications are clearly visible . 3 . Make sure your bags and luggage have locks and name tags .
If you are travelling by car 1 . Check windscreen wipers , oil , water and brake fluid . 2 . Check tyre pressure and tread . 3 . Check your shock absorbers . 4 . Plan your route and carry maps . 5 . Save emergency numbers on your cell phone . 6 . Carry a first aid kit . Keep water and light snacks in the vehicle . 7 . Make sure that your car is well ventilated to ensure the continuous flow of fresh air . 8 . Stop every 200km or so or switch drivers when you feel tired or uncomfortable . 9 . Obey the rules of the road .
When staying at a hotel or guest house 1 . Ensure that identifiable hotel staff assist you with your luggage upon arrival . 2 . Never leave your luggage unattended unless it is locked away in your room . 3 . Keep your room locked at all times . 4 . If someone knocks , check who it is before opening the door . 5 . Keep a photocopy of your passport and other important documentation in your hotel safe .
