Eye health this winter

Easy ways to avoid eye dryness
Whether you love or hate the season , the most common optical complaints during the winter months are dry , itchy , and light sensitive eyes .
The additional reflections on outdoor wet surfaces and warm heaters indoors may take its toll on your eyes .
Don ’ t be misled by the dark and overcast days of winter .
Winter winds and low humidity may dry your eyes out . To minimise the effects and drying ability of the winter air , keep your eyes protected , keep yourself hydrated and run a humidifier in your home to improve the quality of your indoor air .
Stay hydrated
The lacrimal gland continually releases fluid which cleanses and protects the eye ’ s surface commonly known as tears . Drinking plain water is best to ensure the proper functioning of lacrimal glands and helping them to produce a healthy number of natural tears and oils . A dehydrated tear film results in a rough ocular surface which will cause you dry and irritated eyes . Limit the consumption of beverages that tend to dehydrate the body and increase the intake of water-rich fruits to also prevent dry eyes .
Avoid indoor heaters
Heaters reduce the moisture of your indoor air leading to irritation in the eyes , especially if you wear contact lenses . Avoid sitting directly in front of the heater at home or redirect your cars heating vents so as not to blow directly in your eyes . The heat evaporates your tears leaving your eyes vulnerable . Consider wearing spectacles at home if you are a contact lens wearer when the heaters are turned on .
Exercise
Try to stay fit and healthy to keep warm , but also to take care of your dry itchy eyes . Researchers from the University of Waterloo stated that participating in aerobic exercise can lead to an increase in tear secretion and tear film stability . The study suggested that remaining physically active can therefore be an additional effective preventative measure against eye dryness .
Excess tearing
Most people may experience dry eyes in winter but others may have the opposite problem . Your seasonal allergies may flare up causing excess tearing and runny eyes . Pay attention to when your eyes tear up to determine the cause and speak to your healthcare provider to resolve the excess tearing .
Consult your optometrist if you experience any seasonal problems or have any sudden changes in your vision .
