Hi Doctor A couple of weeks ago I slipped and fell in the kitchen and injured my left upper arm and shoulder . My husband drove me to the emergency room at the hospital where I received assistance . I have since noticed that the claim was paid from my savings account and not my hospital benefit . Surely this is wrong ? Lena
Dear Lena Sorry to hear about your accident , I hope that you are recovering well . Claims are only paid from the hospital benefit when you are admitted to hospital , have a planned pre-authorised surgery or treatment in hospital .
When you visit the emergency room / casualty department at a hospital it is treated as a consultation with a GP and paid from day-to-day benefits or savings , depending on the option you are on . Some hospitals require you to pay this amount upfront and then claim the money back from Bonitas . Other options such as BonCap will require you to pay a co-payment .
Good afternoon Dr Both my parents have high blood pressure and I ’ ve heard that it is genetic . How can I tell if I have it ? If I do have high blood pressure , what can I do to reduce it ? Nozipho
Dear Nozipho High blood pressure or hypertension is known as a silent killer because people often have no symptoms . Although there is no known cure for hypertension , you can take steps to prevent it .
A good idea would be to complete a wellness screening check . This includes a blood pressure test so that you can see how you measure up . Once you ’ ve completed the screening and depending what plan you ’ re on , you can access the Wellness Extender benefit . This benefit can be used for consultations with a dietician , biokineticist or physiotherapist and even for a smoking cessation programme .
Leading a healthier lifestyle is a great way to reduce your risk of developing hypertension . Try eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits , vegetables and lean sources of protein such as fish and skinless chicken breasts . Limit alcohol , fat , salt and caffeine and , if you are a smoker , stop smoking ! You should also try exercising regularly – either walking , running or cycling for 30 minutes a day .
