being encouraged or already is heavy. They are best placed
at signalized intersections with moderate traffic flows and a
relatively simple lane designation. Putting bicyclists front-and-
center in an extremely busy and complex intersection might put
them at risk in their long trek through such an intersection.
Bike boxes can also be considered anywhere left- or right-
turning conflicts exist between vehicles and bicyclists.
Particularly advantageous would be the placement of bike
boxes where a municipality wants to encourage bicyclists to
turn left onto a designated bike route. For example, the City
of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, has a long-term goal of creating
connectivity between its on-street bike lanes (including lanes
on North Avenue) and the Oak Leaf Trail in the area of Hoyt
Park. Bike boxes are being considered at the intersection of
West North Avenue/Ludington Avenue, along with a future
bike connection along Ludington Avenue headed south, to help
encourage already-heavy bike traffic to make the necessary
turns to follow this designated bike-friendly route.
