Achievement For All “One of the wonderful things about Woodham Academy is the real sense of community” says Headteacher, Christine Forsyth. Even before their first day in Year 7, students are encouraged to visit Woodham Academy and to become part of the school community. During students’ first term, one lesson every day is taught by their form tutor, giving a real sense of security and belonging. At Woodham Academy, teachers know that students who are actively involved in some aspect of school life tend to do very well in their studies. Many students perform in one of Woodham Academy’s music ensembles, including Woodham Sound, Samba Band, Jazz Band, Instrumental Group and Vocal Group. Performances including the Christmas and Summer concerts and full-scale musical productions such as this year’s We Will Rock You, give students confidence and make parents very proud. Almost a third of Woodham Academy students are members of Woodham Sports Academy which offers high-quality coaching opportunities to elite athletes in a range of sports. Coaching is delivered by Woodham Academy’s award winning PE department, in partnership with other clubs and sporting organisations. These include Premier Player Football Academy, Durham Wildcats Basketball, Sedgefield Water Polo Club, British American Football Association, Camp Cody USA, Durham County Cricket Board, Newton Aycliffe Spartans, Northumbria University and the Tony Blair Sports Foundation. School sport is about so much more than just physical activity. It is about developing the whole person: character, leadership and self-esteem as well as health and well-being. It is also about achievement. Those who take part in competitive sports do better academically. In 2013, 83% of Woodham Sports Academy students gained 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Mathematics.
