Branch News Central Branch The newsletter of MND Scotland W ow, it was a scorcher at the Central Branch Annual Strawberry Tea! We were a bit unfortunate that Andy Murray was playing and winning, thus keeping the numbers down, but we still did well raising a successful total of over £500. Well done to all who helped and of course well done to Andy. There was a television in the club and we all managed to have a few pee ks from time to time. Last year, Tracey Kinsella ‘Swam with Sharks’ and this year she went in a new direction to host a ladies’ day in Falkirk with entertainment, stalls and beauty treatments. Tracey is a hairdresser and the girls who work with her offered their skills to help raise as much as possible; we’ll update you in the next edition of Aware with a final total. October 6th is the date for this year’s Ladies’ Lunch at Grange Manor Hotel. Chef, Paul Cook, will demonstrate his culinary skills for everyone. It should be interesting and hopefully spur us on to greater things in the kitchen – the ticket price is £22, managing to hold last year’s price. Contact Ann Kerr on 01324 620 756 if you wish to attend the Ladies’ Lunch or get involved with Central Branch activities. 4 Edinburgh and Lothian Branch A fter many years of dedicated service as secretary for Edinburgh and Lothian Branch, Willie Downs has decided to step down at the end of this year. On behalf of everyone at MND Scotland we would like to thank Willie for all his hard work and wish him well for the future. This now means that the Branch is looking for a new secretary. The main duties will include Branch administration and act as a main point of contact for all branch communications including acting as a spokesperson for the Branch. In addition the secretary will be responsible for attending and chairing meetings. Time commitment expected will be to attend bi-monthly evening meetings lasting approximately 1.5 hours within the Moira Park sheltered housing complex, 54 Moira Park, Edinburgh EH7 6RU. The secretary is likely to also spend about 4 hours per month dealing with Branch communications, other Branch business and spokesperson duties. The Branch is looking for someone who has good organisational skills and is computer literate with access to a computer. The likely person would also have leadership skills with the willingness to work as part of a team and be able to support and motivate others. Ideally this opportunity would suit someone who has had previous experience as a committee secretary or chair. Contact Dawn Hamilton, MND Scotland Volunteer Development Officer, on 0141 945 1077 or email dawn.hamilton@mndscotland. org.uk for more details. Complementary therapists needed MND Scotland provides a complementary therapy programme to both patients and carers in their own homes. This programme has been running for about three years and the demand for the service is growing. As a result of this we require additional therapists particularly in Fife, Tayside, Highland and Ayrshire. We are looking for qualified therapists in Aromatherapy; Swedish/ Remedial/Sports Massage; Indian Head Massage; Reflexology or Reiki. The therapist must have their own insurance cover of over £1million, however to offset this we offer help with CPD training costs providing the therapist is currently working with our clients. Travel expenses and treatment expenses incurred by the therapist will be payable i.e. massage oil and telephone calls etc. Access to a car is not necessary as massage tables are not always required for treatments. As a volunteer therapist you will negotiate appointment dates with your clients and commit roughly 4 hours per month. A 4 hour training course held in our Glasgow HQ will give a brief overview of MND Awareness and outline the programme. Dawn Hamilton, MND Scotland’s Volunteer Development Officer would be happy to discuss the help we need. Call her on on 0141 945 1077 or email [email protected]
