AVS Newsletter September 16 2016

Fortnightly News September 16th 2016 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER Dear Parents and Carers I am pleased to report that we have had a very successful start to the term with students arriving smartly dressed and well equipped; ready to start their learning on the first day. As I said to the students in our full school assembly, we are lucky in education to have two fresh starts each year: one in January, along with the rest of the world, and another one in September, and I am delighted to see students make the most of the opportunity. During the assembly I reflected on the whole school improvements that took place last year with school attendance rising by 1% to 95.25% and the headline figure in Maths (66%) and English (76%) showing significant gains on the previous year. The challenge for the school this year is to build on these successes and continue with our upward trends. I know that staff and students alike are determined to do this and to show what a great school we are when we open our doors for Open Evening next Thursday. This week the school has launched an exciting long term reading initiative, ‘AVS 50’. All students are encouraged to take part in a reading challenge that will cover reading fifty books over their five years at Avon Valley. The English team and our school librarian have carefully chosen 1000 books for students to choose from and each student has an individual reading log which is held centrally. Reading is well known to enhance writing skills and expand vocabulary and, as an avid reader myself, I look forward to seeing an increase in reading within the school, with the knowledge of the positive literacy benefits and the many hours of enjoyment that it will bring to our students. I know that the staff and students have returned after a refreshing summer break keen to meet the challenges of the new academic year. I look forward to sharing the successes that we will have along the way with you, through this fortnightly newsletter.
