The Wolfpack of VF-1 was established October 14, 1972 and along with sister squadron VF-2, were the first two squadrons to deploy the Tomcat in a combat zone. The squadron was taking part in a WestPac cruise during 1974-75, and were called upon to provide Combat Air Patrol (CAP) during OPERATION FREQUENT WIND, the April 1975 evacuation of US personnel from Saigon, South Vietnam. The VF-1 Tomcat depicted here is F-14A 162603. It was photographed June 15, 1991, shortly after returning to NAS Miramar following OPERATION DESERT STORM. Of interest is the Mi-8 kill marking, representing the only aerial victory registered by a Tomcat during Desert Storm. (Photo: Mike Grove and Craig Kaston)
