A photographer’ s exercise From a photography perspective,‘ Iniochos’ remains refreshingly open by modern standards. A formal Spotter Day provides access to aircraft along the taxiway and runway( complete with endless souvlaki!), but a major draw comes from a little further afar. As flying intensifies, attention shifts to the surrounding terrain, most notably the Vouraikos canyon buried in the Peloponnese terrain. Here, aircraft undertake low-level training missions, familiarization flights and what are known as‘ side missions’ for deployed crew currency. It’ s often in all kinds of weather( it’ s not always hot in Greece!) and is an opportunity that is increasingly rare to shoot in mainland Europe- modern fast jets flown tactically, at low altitude, in real training profiles. The variety of aircraft only adds to the appeal. Fifth-generation platforms operate alongside legacy types, advanced multirole fighters fly next to aircraft nearing the end of their service lives, and support assets quietly enable the whole picture from the background. COAP Wings( www. coapwings. com) ran no less than three trips out there over the period, with every participating photographer absolutely loving their time on the low-level hunt or participating in the Spotters Day, as well as a great social scene.
