OH-58D Kiowa

The Bell OH‐58D Kiowa Warrior is a key asset in the Hellenic Army’ s modernized light‐attack and reconnaissance fleet, acquired from the United States in 2019. Originally built for the U. S. Army, these helicopters were transferred to Greece under the Excess Defense Articles program and refurbished to full operational readiness. Equipped with the type’ s signature mast‐mounted sight— featuring thermal imaging, daylight TV capability, and laser targeting— they provide Greece with enhanced surveillance and rapid‐response capabilities across the Aegean. The fleet supports reconnaissance patrols, coastal monitoring, and day‐and‐night pilot training, helping crews master the aircraft’ s advanced sensors and weapons systems. Kiowa Warriors also participate in combined‐arms exercises and border‐monitoring missions, using their agility and low operating costs to deliver reliable observation and targeting support. Small, precise, and versatile, the OH‐58D fills a critical gap between larger attack helicopters and traditional ground surveillance, reinforcing the importance of light armed reconnaissance in Greece’ s defense posture
