King’s order, the Kingdom of Greater Armenia renounced paganism, becoming the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301. St. Gregory later became the first Catholicos of All Armenians. To this day, one can visit the underground chamber where St. Gregory was imprisoned. Khor Virap was once surrounded by Artashat, one of the ancient capitals of Armenia founded around 180 BC by King Artashes I. The city was designed by Carthaginian General Hannibal, who sought shelter in Armenia after having been defeated by the Romans.
