East and South of Yerevan

Tour 6:

6.1 Khor Virap

Start the tour from the Khor Virap (Deep Dungeon) Monastery (642), a favorite tourist attraction, located about 40 km/24.8 mi south of Yerevan and 12 km/7.5 mi from the modern day city of Artashat in the Ararat marz. Standing high up on the hill, the monastery offers a majestic view of Mount Ararat. It was here that St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned by Armenian King Tiridates III for 13 years. When the King grew ill with disease, his sister Khosrovidukht had a dream that St. Gregory was the only one who could cure him, and so Gregory was released from the pit. After curing the Armenian King of disease, St. Gregory converted King Tiridates to Christianity.
