Sense of Autumn
I want to dance in the dew hung grass,
Tune my mind to the song bird's chorus.
Twirl about in dense morning mist,
Breath fresh air with bright sun rays kissed.
Approach the day in a spirit of peace,
Think positive, and all tensions will cease.
Run through a meadow of daisy filled land,
Seed heads caressing my soft open palms.
Or watch warm light fleck between river rushes,
And paint dappled strokes on dense lake-side bushes.
See hips and haw and dark berried sloe,
Blackbird feeding along the hedge row.
Barns and lofts with fresh fodder filled,
Bare stubble ground that the farmer has tilled.
Fields thick with corn yielding their prize,
Amidst sprightly toil and the harvester's noise.
Where meadow and marsh in random style meet,
And forests form blankets spread under my feet.
This is the landscape that I dearly love,
Caressed by the seasons unfolding above
Here I can sense crisp
autumn winds,
Whirling in spirals among
fallen leaves.
See ancient woodlands
engraved with gold,
Shades of yellow, orange
and alizarin bold.
Daring colours, deep and
intensely rich,
Toss down paths and lodge
in a ditch.
Every breath, every sigh of wind,
Brings further leaves tumbling to the ground.
Nestled beneath trees, in random piles splayed,
These vibrant colours will soon dull and fade.
It won't be long now, winter comes our way,
Edwin R Bailey
And fallen leaves will wither and decay.
