Linda Gough FACI, President of the IAC
A visit to Capel Curig was an interesting prospect for me. It brought back
memories of a mis-spent youth visiting Plas-y-Brenin, the outdoor pursuits
centre in Capel Curig which I visited as part of my college course many years
ago and revisited a number of times to climb and canoe. But this visit would be
for a very different reason. Michael and I were to attend the IAC Peter Coles
AV competition.
We had attended the competition a couple of times when Peter was
organising it in Yorkshire and very much enjoyed it and I felt that as President
of the IAC I had an extra reason for visiting. So we found bed and breakfast on
Marion Waine's recommendation and at breakfast had our first encounter with
AV-ists. We met Howard and Carole Bagshaw and we started talking. I think
from that moment on we hardly stopped all weekend talking to people from all
over who had descended on the Community Centre in Capel Curig for the
competition. They are a friendly lot.
We thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the sequences, some more than
others of course, but all had something to recommend it. I was particularly
interested in how many had moving images incorporated into the sequence.
Some of these would not have been out of place in the IAC Film competition,
others were more the traditional AV sequence, all with outstanding
photography.
It always surprises me how just a few images can tell such poignant stories
or catch a mood so well. There were light hearted moments too. I was
captivated by ice and snow, entranced by animals and birds, moved by love
and death and my mouth was made to water by 'cakes' all in just a few minutes.
The event organiser, Marion Waine is to be congratulated as were the
projectionists John Smith and Jill K. Bunting. Apart from one little moment
when the gremlins got in the projection equipment the weekend ran smoothly.
The Judges, Ron Davies, Eddie Spence and Bryan Stubbs did a sterling job.
I would not have liked to make the
decision on who was awarded
which award. Everyone who
entered
deserves
to
be
commended for providing a first
class show. I look forward to
having a second viewing of some
of the winners at the AV show on
Friday night at the BIAFF show in
Sittingbourne. If you could not get
to Capel Curig perhaps you can
make it to BIAFF. Look forward to
seeing more AV-ists then.
At the end of the event it was
also my very pleasant task of presenting the awards and also a very special
presentation to Richard Brown, which Michael will write about.
