AV News 196 - May 2014
Third party images (up to 30% of each segment of the submission) will be
accepted where they are deemed necessary to support a theme, to suggest a
new interpretation of previous work or to creatively rework content to bring a
different value to original photography. Full attribution and copyright consent
must be provided for all third party images and music.
Licentiate: you will need to show variety in approach and technique with
evidence of creative ability and a good technical standard in all aspects of your
application: photography, production and sound all combined into a theme.
Associate: here we are looking for evidence of creative ability and high technical
standards in image quality, sound recording, mixing and editing, combined with
a strong theme or narrative, together with a comprehensive knowledge and ability
in your discipline. A high level of understanding of composition, lighting and
viewpoints must be demonstrated, with a visual balance and style appropriate to
the subject. Personal engagement with the subject should be evident where
appropriate.
Fellowship: to become a Fellow of the Society you will need to show outstanding
ability and/or originality and creativity, combined with excellence in all technical
areas. The photography and production must be exemplary. Your overall
submission will be at a significantly higher level than the individual components.
We need to see a wide range of skills demonstrated and personal engagement
with the subject where appropriate.
Statement of Intent: Associate and Fellowship applications should be
accompanied by a Statement of Intent, outlining in no more than 150 words the
purpose, objective or intent of the work. This should indicate the target audience
and concisely put your images into a meaningful context.
Traditional AV submissions: we welcome them! While we appreciate that some
people may want to use voice recordings, video, iPhone images, graphics,
animation and so on, many still prefer to simply edit their photographs to music.
However, we can't just have a series of random images - they have to be linked
in some way by a theme.
Membership of the RPS is not required when making an application for a
Distinction at the first two levels. However, if successful, you will need to become
a member to enjoy the full benefits, including using the initials LRPS or ARPS
after your name.
Multimedia Distinctions Advisory Day: the next one is at Fenton House in Bath
on Tuesday, 1 July 2014. You are invited to send your submissions (or work in
progress) to us for detailed advice either by email or by attending on the day in
person.
Multimedia Distinctions Assessment Day: is scheduled for Saturday, 1st
November 2014 - which gives you plenty of time to prepare your submission!
I very much look forward to hearing from you. If you have any queries then
please email [email protected]
I will be attending the AV Internationals at Cirencester along with three
members of the panel so if we don't know you already we will have a chance to
meet then.
