AV News 175 - February 2009
Practical comments from the Judges included ensuring that in landscape
situations it was important to match horizon levels from image to merging
image, the need to beware of using too many split screen effects and care to
eliminate hiss when recording sound. Another word of advice was that whilst
the new PTE 5.5 gives access to many more effects don't take all your tools
out of the box at the same time, simplicity rules. This particularly applies
when rotation of images and constant zooms can produce an unsettling
visual effect. Similarly the page turning device should only be used when it is
appropriate to a story. Several programmes showed how combined use of
images, caption and music can produce a satisfying impactful message
without the need for commentary; a problem that faces many beginners..
Before the names of the winning authors were announced the judges
showed examples of each of their own award winning work; Heather's was a
human story, Keith's a haunting illustrated poem, and Dick's a landscape
feature. All incorporated 'third images' . Does this effect win a path to national
competitions judges hearts?
The first East Anglia Novices Trophy plate went to Colin Birch for his DIY
Project (making of an electronic guitar). Second place went to Roger Homan
for Postcards from Venice, who used just music and dissolves to support
creative photography. Peter Crane's Greensted Church, incorporated a third
image and won third place.
