AV News 175 - February 2009
Creative dissolves and third images in suitable register were skills to be
rewarded, but I have seen so many zooms, flips, spins, curtains, circles and
jumping words recently that I wonder if AV is becoming a competition in
PicturesToExe skills?
But back to Mar del Plata! The organisers, Alicia and Norma Tomasini and
their friends, were overwhelmingly kind and welcoming. My fellow jurors were
skilled and amiable and I felt great respect for each of them. Edith Menendez
is a professional videographer and Pablo Hanson is an artist and designer.
Whilst appreciating AV they are not AV-ers themselves. Obviously this affected
their views - and the results. Whereas most of the time our judgements were in
accord, there were a few sequences where our markings (A,B and C with + and
- where required) differed greatly! They both loved dramatic effect and were not
fazed by freneticism. At the final judgement I felt that I was fighting my corner
for traditional qualities.
The Prize List, when finally we got there, produced a surprising number of
Italian sequences, but perhaps, less surprisingly, this showed the difference
between cultures, ie the similarity in the latin temperaments in the Spanish and
Italian minds. Unusually there was only one British entrant this year. Out of four
sequences entered Peter Coles gained two acceptances: 'Essence' and 'Kind
of Gentle', the latter gaining 10th place in Argentina.
The experience brought home to me how much compromise a jury result
must include, something I hadn't realised before becoming involved. The final
results list did not really feel right to me - but this is my judgement. Possibly
Edith and Pablo felt similarly? Such is the responsibility of the juror. I had to be
content to see that at least some of my most valued sequences were up there,
but I still feel that a number of excellent works missed gaining the acclaim they
deserved. I now see that this will often be the case.
I shall, however, think more kindly of Jury decisions in the future!
