AV News 193 - August 2013 Great Northern AV Weekend Howard Gregory The 2013 Great Northern will be held on Friday 29th November to Sunday 1st December at the usual venue - Wilmslow Guild Adult Education Centre, Wilmslow, just south of Manchester. Wilmslow has excellent road, rail and air connections and several convenient hotels. This may well be the last Great Northern, so if you haven't yet been to one, this might be your last chance. (See note on Page 47. Eds) Friday 29th November, at 7.30pm - Colin & Rhona Balls - The Falkland Islands - where nature is still in charge. Whilst the word 'Falklands' may have unfortunate political connotations, the islands are one of the last unspoilt wildernesses left on earth. There are over 700 islands - most inhabited only by wildlife. The total human population is around 2,600, almost all of whom live in Port Stanley, the capital. The third largest island, Weddell, which is about the size of the Isle of Wight, has a population of five. And that was including Colin & Rhona. We have seen Colin & Rhona's photography, accompanied by Colin's inimitable commentary, on several occasions in the past - most memorably when they filled the main hall (twice) with their presentation on Antarctica. This promises to be a superb evening, so join us for a feast of wildlife, scenery and an insight into a completely different way of living. This event will be open to the general public, so book early to avoid disappointment. Saturday 30th November, at 10.00am - 'Great Northern Festival' A national audio visual competition open to anybody resident in the British Isles, and to overseas members of British AV Groups.
