Re-select your . psd file , you should now see that all edits undertaken to the newly created linked . psb file are shown on your Smart Object layer . Further edits can be carried out if you so wish . Note edits will only show on the Smart Object layer after the linked file is saved . If you happen to close this linked file it can be instantly recalled and returned to the work area by double clicking on the Smart Object thumbnail of your . psd file .
The main . psd file doesn ' t need to be open to edit a linked file . The linked file is separate and can be opened at any time , edited , saved , and closed just like any other file . However if edits are carried out without the main . psd file open it will not automatically update . When opened it will however know that it ' s out-ofsync , i . e . an update is pending . In this instance the Smart Object Layer thumbnail will have a small yellow icon bearing a black exclamation mark in the lower right corner . The image on the right shows a Smart Object layer with three Smart Filters active , the layer is linked to an external file indicated by a small chain link icon in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail . Also present is the yellow and black exclamation icon , although it ' s a bit small to show clearly on this printed page . To update the Smart Object layer use the main ' Layer Menu ', click ' layer ', ' Smart Objects ', ' Update Modified Content '.
Do not move a linked file to any other location otherwise Photoshop will not be able to find it . If a link is broken the linked Smart Object layer within your main . psd file will show a small icon containing a red circle with a white question mark , in such instances the file must be located and the link re-established . Any previously saved Photoshop file can be inserted as a layer into the current file either as ' Linked ' or ' Embedded '. To achieve a linked insertion use the main ' File Menu '. Click ' File ', ' Place Linked ', whereupon an explorer window will appear , navigate to locate and select the required file , then click ' Link '. If the file you choose is a . psd with multiple layers then all ' visible ' layers will be transposed as one flattened image layer . This will be placed onto a new layer within your current . psd file . Hit the return button to finalise the transposition , adjust its position if required . A linked icon will appear in the new layer . Layers that are not made visible within the external file will be ignored and not transposed . This new linked layer can be updated exactly as described previously . To ' Embed ' an external file without maintaining links use the main ' File Menu ' click on ' File ', ' Place Embedded ', navigate to and select the required file then click ' Place ', the file will be placed onto a new layer within your current . psd file .
