AV News 186 - November 2011 Earlier this year the PAGB issued a general rule that all images submitted for competitions and the APM Awards must be entirely the work of the entrant, clearly excluding the use of images from any other source regardless of copyright issues. The PAGB recognises that this could severely impact on the number of applications for AV Awards which, currently, are embraced within the PAGB Awards For Photographic Merit. However, assessment can hardly be based on photographic expertise if any/many/all of the images are not the work of the applicant. The PAGB are considering changes to these procedures with the intention of easing this requirement in relation to AV submissions for their awards. The review is also addressing any other changes that may be deemed desirable to recognise the changing nature of AV production techniques and content. The PAGB expects to be able to publish its proposals shortly which, it is hoped, will be implemented in time to apply for the currently proposed assessment in October 2012. Just to clarify a couple of points: We, as Joint Editors of 'AV News', would never intentionally publish anything that was deemed to be 'confidential' and we have aplogised to Peter for any embarrasment it may have caused. His document was circulated around the PAGB Federations with the request to fully discuss the contents and to bring their thoughts to the PAGB meeting in early April. As this was well past our 24th March deadline for the May edition, we made up the page and inserted it into the magazine after Peter's requested notice for the October 2011 adjudications. It was our intention to contact Peter following the meeting to update the article with the outcome of the discussions. However, at the end of March the untimely death of Peter Coles totally occupied our thoughts necessitating a great many rewrites to the magazine and so, unfortunately, we just forgot. While these are discrete areas of personal and professional practice they also allow for a wider interpretation of multi-platform work and this is encouraged. Multimedia & Narrative can be defined for the purposes of the Panel and will be viewed as a considered object or objects that need/s to be seen over a period of time. It will use both new and established tools of visual literacy. Evidence will include a structured statement of intent at Associate and Fellowship levels. Page 39
