AV News 192 - May 2013 Just keep making those Sequences Joan Horne ARPS DPAGB The East Midland AV Group are trying hard to get us, the members, involved in going one step further with our AVs. So, after ‘two wise men ‘and one lady have been to advise us, we are all invited to have a go. Early in the season Howard Bagshaw came with lots of advice in producing top quality sequences. He was followed by Howard and Suzanne Gregory showing us how to produce an acceptable sound track. Now it was our turn! Encouraged by these guest speakers, we were all invited to produce a two minute sequence, entitled, ‘My Garden’ with our own sound track! No using just a piece of music. We had to be more adventurous than that! Not one to forego a challenge, we set to work. We had many photos of the garden, not surprisingly with our grandchildren running around it. Emily, aged two seemed a good candidate for a dialogue with us. Why ever did I think that?!! One day, while baby sitting we took along the Edirol and popped it on the sofa while two year old Emily played on the floor. The TV was playing in the background, the King Charles spaniel kept coming for a cuddle and the usual chaos ensued. Once home, I took Howard’s advice about recording my own voice in a well sound dampened room: no TV or ticking clock and the curtains closed. Nursery rhymes would be used to add atmosphere and pace; so far, so good. Then it was time to assemble all the tracks in CoolEdit. (Yes, I know - I’m a bit old fashioned but I’m used to it.) It was at this point that I remembered what Howard had said. You can’t beat getting a good recording in the first place! We needed those nursery rhymes nice and loud. No subtle background here!! Shall I show it to the group? I don’t know yet but it’s a fantastic sequence! When Emily came to stay for the day recently, it kept her mesmerised. “Play it again, Grandpa” she said three times. Next time we look after her and are desperate for a quick cuppa, you know how we will keep her occupied, don’t you? PS It is called, ‘The Garden.
