AV News 179 - February 2010 Previous KCPA AV competitions have been held in the afternoons but, given the growth in digital AV production, Folkestone CC decided that, as many sequences had to be omitted last year, this year it would be better to hold a whole day event. Bob: A total of 46 entries were received from 30 entrants representing 12 Associates of the KCPA. The 30 "first choice" entries provided a running time of 3 hours, just right for a comfortable days viewing. Neville: The day was divided up into four sessions with either seven or eight sequences per session with refreshment breaks between the morning and afternoon sessions and a splendid ploughman's lunch for the assembled gathering held in the spacious foyer, all served by members of Folkestone Camera Club - and what a great job they did. The judges were Gerald Kitiyakara LRPS and, standing in at short notice for Mike Dale ARPS who had to withdraw on health grounds, Mike Kirsting, both from Surrey and the South London Federation. As might be expected there was a considerable variety of subject matter, from motorbikes to mountaineering, flowers to architecture - but not a single sequence on a war theme. There were several sequences of images with music - Photo Harmony AVs - but the majority were accompanied by a commentary. Bob: The following awards were made Certificates of Merit went to John Long - Sevenoaks CC - "Fishing Fleet Boneyard" There was some excellent photography in this sequence, to tell a story and create a somewhat haunting, if not macabre, atmosphere complimented by appropriately haunting music throughout. The rather frequent transitions between landscape and vertical did lack some subtlety. Don Foster - Tonbridge CC - "You're the One for Me" This was the only sequence in the competition with a touch of humour. The photographer's love of his particular brand of camera would cause quiet amusement, as he puts his "cuckoo in the nest" of all the other well known brands. It was well thought through. The images within the screen on the back of the camera were impressive in their own right. Peter Humphrey LRPS - Orpington PS - "From Cradle to Grave" The photographer has captured each of the works of art in Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo exceptionally well. We are taken on a journey from our birth to death by a series of images of the sculpture's artistic concept and appropriately presented in monochrome, exploring various angles so that each work of art stands out against an uncluttered background. Best Photography - Andy Wood - Folkestone CC- "The French Alps" The short opening voice-over to explain what we were about to see didn't initially fill us with inspiration. However this feeling was soon dispelled, because the images that followed were of excellent quality and composition, the sequence developed to show the magnificence of the Alpine ranges which were awe inspiring.
