AV News 197 - August 2014 3. PANNING. Once you have mastered Rule One and seen to it that the action is what goes on in the frame and not what you do with the camera, you can give yourself a little rein and try some gentle panning. Again this is something that beginners rush into far too eagerly since they have little understanding of the purpose of the pan. Critics call excessive panning 'hosepiping', waving the camera all over the scenery and drenching us with moving blur. I prefer to think of it as like a vacuum cleaner, since what the cameraman is trying to do is to suck in all that he sees….and spewing it out into our laps! Like the excessive zoom, all that it achieves is to disorientate us. Later notes will explain the proper use of pans but for now just remember that to do them properly you need a tripod. Start your shot from static for a second or two, then pan slowly, covering not more than three frames-worth, and end up static for a second or two. Then, in editing, these static scenes might be usable in their own right. Panning without a tripod needs practice. Get into a comfortable stance and practice the sweep a few times so that you don't lose balance as you turn. The stance is equally important for the FOLLOW, a particular form of pan when you lock onto a moving object, like a runner, a racing car or a sailing boat and follow it round. To do this really professionally let the object 'pass across' the frame gaining all the time on your movement.
