AV News 197 - August 2014 'Talbot House' Which became a home from home for soldiers in the First World War; 'Thomas' A young man in Ireland joins the British Army; 'A Rich Legacy' The life story of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas; 'The Black Chair' A story of a Welsh poet and a Belgium furniture maker; 'Merthyr' Is about the miners struggle during the demise of coal mining in south Wales. Between sequences using PTE they went through a number of demonstrations and methods, from importing the images and on incorporating vertical images onto a backing image, to the building of a soundtrack explaining as they went along how they include sound effects. Incorporating them at just the right level often means that they are almost inaudible, but they subconsciously set the atmosphere and scene, another tip was that too often bird sounds are far too loud and overpowering. Also mentioned was how to cut and edit the music and voiceover as well as altering the volume levels. All of this must have been a great help to the less experienced workers present. During these demo's some tips where given to Linda and Edgar from the floor for which they were most grateful, which just goes to show everyone can learn from these days. All too soon the day drew to a close with people saying what a wonderful event this had been and how interesting, informative and inspirational the afternoon sessions were, with the meticulous attention to detail that shines through in all of Linda and Edgar's work. So as people said their good byes venturing out into the mist and gloom for their journeys home, I feel sure that many will have departed with increased knowledge and encouragement eager to try and incorporate into their sequences some of the tips learnt during the day. From all at The Northern Audio Visual Group our very special thanks go to Linda and Edgar for making this such a memorable day. M id T h a m e s A V D a y - W o k in g h a m Peter Harms Usually on these Days, the sun is beaming down and we are all sitting inside in a darkened hall but it was raining on Sunday 27th April so 60 souls were happy to be inside. As usual, the day started with attendee's sequences and we were treated to 21 offerings covering a very wide range of subjects including, historical, humour, abstract, travelogue, biographies and - inevitably for this anniversary year - war reflections. Our guests on this occasion were Edgar Gibbs FRPS MPAGB AV-FIAP and Linda Gibbs MPAGB AV-FIAP who offered brief but very useful comments on each sequence of which more later. Page 11
